..::awareness is key::..

20 June, 2007 · 3 Comments

so today i am taking the kids to the doc for a basic check up.  well, mainly hosanna, since she is now one year old.
i’m feeling a bit nervous.
the thing is, several months ago, jeremy and i decided we were not going to have our kids vaccinated any further.  after doing some reading and research, and hearing some personal stories, we felt that the right thing for us to do was not vaccinate any more.

today i am going to let the doctor know of our decision.  i have NO idea how he’ll react.  we’ve always maintained the stance of “the bare minimum” when it comes to vaccines, and even then had to endure a bit of questioning from the nurse who administers the shots.  our doctor seemed to understand, however, and didn’t push too hard, so hopefully today will be ok.

without getting into all the details, i feel like there are a lot of risks involved in the immunization process.  for some reason, the medical system does not feel the need to divulge the information to us.  so, as parents who want the best for our kids, we must take the initiative to search it out for ourselves.

i am not saying that vaccination is wrong and that no one should do it, but what i will say is that every parent NEEDS to be aware of the risks, and needs to make informed decisions.  read lots of information, do some research, talk to other parents, and most importantly, ask God for wisdom in all circumstances.

there are plenty of resources available both in book form as well as on the internet.  of course, not all of it is credible.  use discretion and discernment.
i tend to jump on bandwagons from time to time, and, knowing this about myself, i pray that God would help me at all times to be reasonable, rational and listen for his leading…not believing everything i read, and always taking a balanced approach.

i will continue to research this topic to find out more…and to maintain a balanced position.  Lord, please lead me….there are SO many decisions we make as parents.  so overwhelming sometimes,….but i know you are wiser than all of us…and you promise to give wisdom to they that ask.

**UPDATE**
the conversation with the doctor went something like this:

DR:  “so, she needs to have 2 shots today.”

MEL:  “well, actually, we have recently made the decision not to vaccinate any further.”

DR: “oh  i see.”  (silence)….looking hosanna over….
“you do realize she’s at risk.”

MEL:  (thinking: well, yes, in fact she’s at risk either way… but we don’t get to hear about that…)
“uh-huh, yes.”…(pause)…”i’ve just been doing a lot of reading and feel that this is the best decision right now.”

…jumping ahead a few minutes…. enter nurse…

NURSE:  “so am i doing some shots?”

DR: “no”

NURSE: ”oh, baby not feeling well?”

DR: “no, she’s fine.  we should be giving shots but we’re not.”

…exit nurse…

then my doctor procedes to tell me that his daughter is doing the same thing with her kids, and they have many discussions about this.  and he tells me that the decimation of the aboriginal peoples was largely due to the measles, which is still around in many countries…

so, i tell my doctor that i will continue to read, research and become as well informed as i can be…he encourages me to read from good, well-rounded sources…not just one sided.  i whole-heartedly agree…and we part amicably.

not too bad!   i like our doctor.  he’s a nice man…and i appreciate his concern and his willingness to not argue about it with me.

but i have to say, i’m glad that’s over.  :)

ok, and on a more humourous, although scarily (sp?) true note, check out this video….haha!

this is so good…please read!

a friend sent me this message in an email today.  what a great reminder and encouragement.  funny how i was *just* thinking about this and i came to check my email, and this was there.  what a great confirmation in my heart.  thanks Lord.

QUIET HEROES
by Max Lucado

Quiet heroes dot the landscape of our society. They don’t wear ribbons
or kiss trophies; they wear spit-up and kiss boo-boos. They don’t make
the headlines, but they do sew the hemlines and check the outlines and
stand on the sidelines. You won’t find their names on the Nobel Prize
short list, but you will find their names on the homeroom, carpool, and
Bible teacher lists.

They are parents, both by blood and deed, name and calendar. Heroes. News
programs don’t call them. But that’s okay. Because their kids do .
They call them Mom. They call them Dad. And these moms and dads, more
valuable than all the executives and lawmakers west of the Mississippi,
quietly hold the world together.

Be numbered among them. Read books to your kids. Play ball while you can
and they want you to. Make it your aim to watch every game they play, read
every story they write, hear every recital in which they perform.

Children spell love with four letters: T-I-M-E. Not just quality time, but
hang time, downtime, anytime, all the time. Your children are not your
hobby; they are your calling.

Your spouse is not your trophy but your treasure.

Don’t pay the price David paid. Look ahead to his final hours. To see
the ultimate cost of a neglected family, look at the way our hero dies.

David is hours from the grave. A chill has set in that blankets can’t
remove. Servants decide he needs a person to warm him, someone to hold him
tight as he takes his final breaths.

Do they turn to one of his wives? No. Do they call on one of his children?
No. They seek “for a lovely young woman throughout all the territory of
Israel . and she cared for the king, and served him; but the king did
not know her” (1 Kings 1:3-4).

I suspect that David would have traded all his conquered crowns for the
tender arms of a wife. But it was too late. He died in the care of a
stranger, because he made strangers out of his family.

But it’s not too late for you.

Make your wife the object of your highest devotion. Make your husband the
recipient of your deepest passion. Love the one who wears your ring.

And cherish the children who share your name.

Succeed at home first.

RAIN!

5 June, 2007 · 2 Comments

today it is c-c-c-c-cold!!! and really rainy!  its been so hot and humid here recently, which i have actually enjoyed….but today is feeling very cool.  jeremy’s parents are visiting here from texas, and they were hoping for some cool weather, so their prayers were answered.  :)   God is good.
i am feeling much better lately….getting better sleep, still getting up early, my garden is growing (YAYYAAYAY!—and my friends sarah and wes just came and brought us a whole truckload of organic compost:  horse manure, straw mulch, sand mixture…..oh, so yummy!), jeremy has finally moved into his new studio/office and things will start to become a bit more “normal” (?!?!?) is there such a thing?
(okay, i WILL post some pics of the garden AND of jeremy’s VERY cool new studio.  just gotta get the camera back….)

so, its kind of strange…ever since jer and i have been married….(4.5 years), we have mostly always been together all day….i.e.  he worked at home, we worked together at the ywam base, etc…..BUT now he actually goes off to work every day, and we are missing each other a bit.  i think joshijah is feeling a bit strange about it too…he is acting a little funny towards jeremy, almost as though he is feeling a bit rejected or something.  funny how kids can sense when something’s different.  i think this will be a good thing for us though….it gives me a daily goal…a time when i am expecting my husband to come home from work…so i can have things tidy, cozy, ready for him to come home and eat dinner…

in other news:  i am now officially a diva girl!  I excitedly bought a diva cup after reading about it here, as well as on several other blogs.  everyone seemed to be raving about it, or other ones similar.  i’ve always thought tampons were a bit weird, although i used them, and pads, well….blech, but used them too.  anyways, today is my first try with the cup.  i was a bit nervous, but i am happy to announce, it feels great.  comfortable, i mean.  and as for everything else, i will report on it later, once i have used it for a while.  :)
the cost of this diva cup was about $35.oo (canadian), but it will last for a couple of years at least, and i know i would spend much more than that on feminine hygiene products.  so, it was an economical buy.  also, its much healthier to use.  and lastly, its environmentally friendly.  so, all-in-all……diva-licious!

** tonight we are going to the store with jer’s mom and dad to buy this.  jeremy’s parents are buying it for the kids (as long as we like it once we see it).  i’ve been looking at sara’s pics of her burley, and have been thinking how great it would be to have one for the kids…just to cruise around town, etc…  so, we’ll see how it goes!  i am really excited!  yay!

i will post pictures of all of the afore-mentioned things soon!  (well, except the diva cup of course….not gonna do that.  heh)

have a great day!
